In most Nepali households, dashain ghar safai (दशैं घर सफाई) isn’t spring cleaning with a festival attached. It’s preparation for ritual purity, and the order you do it in matters.

On Ghatasthapana morning, the kalash is established and barley seed is sown for jamara in the puja kotha or dyo kotha. From that moment until Dashami, most families treat that room as consecrated space. The jamara is kept in low light, watered daily, left undisturbed. No sweeping. No vacuum. No moving the shelf to get behind it. No chemical floor cleaner.

So the puja room isn’t the last room on your Dashain house cleaning list. It’s the first one you need to finish. Get that single thing right and the rest of the schedule falls into place on its own.

Customs differ — Newar, Bahun-Chhetri, Janajati and Madhesi households each keep Dashain in their own way, and your family’s practice is the one that counts. But the underlying logic is close to universal: finish the ritual spaces before the festival begins, because you can’t go back in.

2. The Kitchen — Built for Masu, Not Just Everyday Meals

Time: 3–5 hours. Do it 4–7 days before Ghatasthapana.

• Degrease the chimney, its filters, and the wall behind the stove
• Scrub the gas stove, burners and trivets
• Empty, defrost and wipe the fridge; throw out anything expired
• Wipe every cabinet inside and out — including the tops
• Descale the sink and taps
• Wash and dry the pressure cookers, karahi and the big degchi you only pull out at festivals
• Mop with a degreaser, not just water
• Check behind the fridge and under the sink for common household pests. Deal with them now, not during the festival

The tops of the kitchen cabinets are the one spot we find neglected in almost every Dashain job. A year of cooking vapour and Valley dust settles up there and turns into a film that a dry cloth won’t shift — it needs a degreaser and a bit of patience. Nobody sees it. It’s just the difference between a kitchen that’s clean and one that’s actually clean.

Why the kitchen is different at Dashain: Ashtami and Nawami bring a volume of meat cooking most kitchens never see the rest of the year. Grease travels — walls, ceiling, the underside of shelves. 3. Living Room, Sofa and Galaicha — Where Guests Actually Sit

Time: 3–4 hours plus drying. Start 7–10 days out.

4. Bedrooms and Guest Rooms

Time: 1.5–2 hours per room.

• Strip and wash all bedding; sun the mattresses and pillows on a dry day
• Vacuum the mattress, especially along the seams — a sensible moment to check for bed bugs, or udus kira, before anyone stays over
• Clear and reorganise the wardrobe. This is the natural point in the year to donate what you don’t wear
• Wipe under and behind the bed
• Windows, sills, curtains
• Actually set up the guest room: fresh towels, a lamp that works, somewhere to put a suitcase. Small things, and they’re what people remember

5. Bathrooms — The Room Guests Quietly Judge

Time: 1–2 hours per bathroom.

• Descale the shower, taps and geyser inlet. Kathmandu’s water is mineral-heavy in most areas, and limescale builds faster than people expect

• Clear the drains properly. Hair and soap block them, and the worst possible moment to find out is with a house full of relatives

6. Stairs, Entrance and Corridors

Time: 1–2 hours.

• Sweep and wash the stairs, top down
• Wipe railings and banisters — high-touch, almost never cleaned
• Clean switchboards and light switches
• Wash the main door, its frame, and the doorbell
• Sweep the entrance and put out a shoe rack — expect twenty pairs at once during tika
• Before Phulpati on 17 October: the doorway and courtyard should be properly clean for the arrival of flowers and leaves

7. Rooftop, Balcony and Aangan

Time: 2–3 hours.

• Clear the rooftop of debris and standing water
• Unblock the drain outlets before winter
• Wash the aangan or courtyard floor

On safety: parapets, exterior glass and rooftop water tanks are the jobs where falls happen. If something needs a ladder or leaning over an edge, that’s genuinely worth handing to someone with a harness and training. No amount of saved money is worth a fall from a Kathmandu rooftop.

8. The Water Tank — The Step Most Dashain House Cleaning Plans Skip

Time: 1–3 hours. Book three weeks ahead.

This is the most consequential item on the whole list, and the one that gets left off most often — mainly because it isn’t festival-shaped. It doesn’t look like Dashain preparation, so it quietly slides off the plan.

Your household is about to double or triple its water use, and serve drinking water and cooked food to elderly relatives and small children. The World Health Organization’s guidance on household water treatment and safe storage is blunt about why this matters: safe water frequently gets recontaminated inside the home, and storage is where it happens.

In the tanks we open after monsoon, sediment and biofilm are the norm rather than the exception — particularly overhead plastic tanks that catch daylight, and underground reserve tanks fed by tanker or boring water. The other thing we find constantly is a lid that no longer seats properly. A warped or missing seal is how dust, insects and light get in, and light is what lets algae grow in the first place.

• Clean both the overhead and the underground tank
• Check and replace the lid seal
• Flush the line afterwards
• Do it at least a week before Ghatasthapana so the tank refills and settles

How Long Does Dashain House Cleaning Actually Take?

Realistic estimates for a reasonably maintained Kathmandu home. Add 40–50% if the place hasn’t had a deep clean since last Dashain.

Take a typical three-floor house in Baneshwor — two bedrooms upstairs, kitchen and living room in the middle, a bathroom on each level, plus stairs and a rooftop. Done properly by the family, that’s five to six days of real work spread across evenings and weekends. A trained team finishes it in nine or ten hours, and the reason isn’t that we work harder. It’s that three people work different floors simultaneously with machines, while a family works one room at a time between office, school runs and Dashain shopping.

Why Prices Climb as Ghatasthapana Approaches

This is straightforward supply and demand, and it’s worth understanding rather than resenting.

Every cleaning company in the Valley draws from the same small pool of trained crews, and the entire industry tries to serve several weeks of concentrated demand inside about three. Book in mid-September and you pay the standard rate and choose your date. Call in the first week of October and you’re bidding for whatever’s left — usually at a premium, often with no weekend slots at all.

If you want a specific date, book it by the third week of September. That’s the entire trick.

What You Should Not Clean During Dashain

Practices differ from family to family — follow your own household’s. That said, these are widely observed and worth planning around:

• Don’t disturb the jamara or the kalash. No sweeping, vacuuming or shifting furniture in that room from Ghatasthapana until Dashami
• Avoid strong chemicals in the puja kotha even for routine wiping during the festival. Plain water and a soft cloth
• Don’t sweep up the tika-day rice and abir straight away. Many families let the day finish first, then clean
• Don’t bin the jamara. It’s traditionally released into flowing water, placed at the base of a tree, or returned to soil
• Many households avoid sweeping after dark during the festival days, and particularly around Laxmi Puja later in Tihar

1. Post-monsoon mould. By early October, north-facing walls, the backs of wardrobes and bathroom ceilings often carry mould from four months of damp. Clean it, dry the surface completely, then keep the room ventilated — painting over untreated mould never holds. The US EPA’s guidance on cleaning mould in the home gives a useful rule of thumb: patches under about 10 square feet you can generally handle yourself; anything larger, or anything that keeps returning, needs professional attention.

2. Everything textile is damp. Carpets, mattresses, curtains and upholstery have all absorbed monsoon humidity. Deep clean early and dry properly. October afternoons in Kathmandu are decent drying weather, but only for a few hours a day — the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecast is worth a look before you commit to washing every curtain in the house on the same morning.

3. The dust switches back on. Post-monsoon is exactly when Valley road dust returns. Clean your windows too early and they’re grey again by Dashami. Do the wet work first and save the glass for last.

4. Water supply timing. A deep clean drinks water. Check your tanker booking or your KUKL distribution schedule before you start — running dry halfway through a kitchen degrease is one of the most common and most avoidable Dashain house cleaning problems.

5. Slow drying. Curtains, carpets and sofa upholstery take noticeably longer to dry in October than in April. Build two spare days into the plan and you’ll never be hanging damp curtains the night before Ghatasthapana.

Dashain Ghar Safai for Flats and Rented Rooms

Almost every Dashain cleaning guide assumes a multi-storey family home. A lot of Kathmandu doesn’t live in one, and the advice doesn’t scale down cleanly.

For a 1BHK or 2BHK flat, the whole job is realistically one long day, or two comfortable half-days:

• Kitchen degrease (2 hrs) → bathroom (1 hr) → bedroom (1.5 hrs) → living room and sofa (2 hrs) → windows and balcony (1 hr)
• Set up your puja space — a shelf or a corner counts — and finish it before Ghatasthapana like everyone else
• Ask your building manager about the shared overhead tank. In most apartment buildings this is the landlord’s responsibility, and in most buildings it doesn’t happen unless a tenant asks. A polite message to the building group in September usually does it
• Sort out drying early. No balcony means curtains and covers need washing a good week ahead
• Renting and expecting family? Put your hours into the bathroom, the kitchen, and wherever people will sit. That’s what actually gets noticed

After Dashami: The Dashain House Cleaning Nobody Plans For

Most cleaning advice stops at tika day. Here’s what genuinely happens next.

Tika stains. Dahi, chamal, abir and red tika end up on shirts, kurtas, sofa arms, cushion covers and floors. Rinse fabric in cold water immediately — hot water sets the dye permanently. On upholstery, blot; don’t rub, or you’ll drive it into the weave.

Jamara. Collect it from around the house and dispose of it properly rather than sweeping it into the rubbish.

Kitchen grease, round two. Four or five days of heavy meat cooking leaves the chimney, the wall behind the stove and the floor needing a second degrease. This one isn’t optional if you want the kitchen to smell right by November.

Guest-traffic floors and sofa. Dozens of visitors across five days. Spot-clean the sofa and vacuum the carpet before anything sets — this is precisely the point where a professional carpet or sofa clean earns its money.

Bathrooms. Heavy use by a lot of people. Full disinfect.

Waste. Food waste, packaging, sweets boxes, disposable plates. Clear it fast, before it starts attracting pests.

And then Tihar. Laxmi Puja falls in the second week of November 2026, roughly two and a half weeks after Dashami, and it carries its own expectation: Laxmi enters a clean, well-lit home. Diyos on clean sills, a swept entrance, a tidy aangan.

The efficient move is to plan for two cleans, not three — a full deep clean before Ghatasthapana, then a lighter reset in the last week of October that carries you straight into Tihar.

Should You Do Dashain House Cleaning Yourself or Hire Help?

Do it yourself if you’re in a flat or a small house, you have at least three free days in late September, you own reasonable equipment, and nothing on your list involves working at height.

Hire professionals if you have three or more floors, you’re short on time, the house hasn’t had a deep clean in over a year, you need exterior glass or rooftop work, you’re hosting a large tika gathering, or there are elderly people, small children or anyone with asthma or allergies in the house. Whoever you hire, ask what happens if something gets damaged — and get the answer before you book, not after.

Hire for specific jobs even if you’re doing the rest yourself. Water tank cleaning, carpet and sofa deep cleaning, exterior glass and pest control all need equipment and chemicals that simply aren’t worth buying for one week a year. Plenty of families do their own Dashain ghar safai room by room and bring in a team for exactly those four things. That’s often the smartest split, and the cheapest.
